Advancing AV fistula training: From first stitch to functional flow

Balazs Gasz, consultant cardiac surgeon at Zala County Hospital (Zalaegerszeg, Hungary) reports on the Surgical Arteriovenous (AV) Anastomosis Workshop taking place at the 2025 Charing Cross (CX) symposium (23–25 April, London, UK).

The Surgical AV Anastomosis Workshop at the 2025 CX symposium—part of a comprehensive offered more than just a hands-on experience. It delivered measurable insight into vascular access creation. Held on April 24 and fully booked within hours, the session brought together early-career surgeons, trainees, and vascular access specialists for a transformative learning experience.

Under the high-level of supervision with Nicholas Inston (Queen Elizabeth Hospital Birmingham, Birmingham, UK), Ali Kordzadeh (Mid and South Essex NHS Foundation Trust, Chelmsford, UK), and Hannah Maple (Guy’s and St Thomas’ NHS Foundation Trust, London, UK), each participant performed a sutured arteriovenous fistula anastomosis using high- simulators and received immediate, computer-assisted feedback on their technique. Unlike traditional workshops, the YourAnastomosis platform provides quantitative evaluation of anastomotic geometry and simulates the functional impact of each surgical decision.

The experience offered a personalised masterclass in the tips and tricks of vascular access and was also meaningful for those performing their first arteriovenous fistula (AVF) anastomosis. The combination of tactile realism and automated flow-based analysis helped participants gain confidence, recognise subtle technical variations, and connect their technique to functional outcomes. Feedback reflected both enthusiasm and critical reflection, highlighting the power of precision-based learning.

YourAnastomosis is designed around proficiency-based progression, combining real-case simulators, objective scoring, and personalised performance analytics. This model supports structured skill-building across vascular, coronary, and aortic procedures, with results tracked over time anywhere, anytime.

Whether used in subscription-based programs, bootcamps, or at major surgical conferences, YourAnastomosis offers more than simulation: it delivers data-driven insight to improve surgical performance and patient outcomes.

After the workshops, you can continue your training at multiple levels, at your own pace: start with the basics of vascular surgery, practice dedicated cases with home-based simulators and outcome prediction for proficiency-based training anytime, anywhere.
